Gardening season is upon, and we put together some pointers that will help keep your garden growing through summer.

When you buy your home in the winter or early spring, you can start making plans for where you want your garden to be. Our real estate agents can help you buy your home and get settled in time to start planning for your garden. If you've grown a garden in the past, you know how important it is to plan ahead and start early.

  • Choose Your Plants and Seeds – Once you know what growing zone you are in, you can start to choose the plants and seeds that will grow best in your area.

  • Map Out Your Garden – There are many Rockland County homes for sale that have a lawn or yard that is large enough to allow you to have the size of garden you can be proud of.

  • Till the Soil – Tilling the soil will break up all of the large clumps of dirt and allow air to go deep into the layers of soil. Tilling the ground in two different directions will make sure all of the dirt is turned over sufficiently enough to mix in any yard debris or moisture.

  • Add Fertilizer and Till Again – Add fertilizer and till the soil one more time. You are basically stirring up the soil so that air and nutrients will be churned up towards the top so the seeds you plant will have adequate nutrients.

  • Water the Soil and Rake – Water the ground thoroughly and use a stiff-tined rake to smooth out the soil. When you are ready to start planting, rake the soil again to aerate it and loosen the top layers of soil lightly.

  • Plant Your Seeds – Make your rows and begin to plant your seeds according to the directions on the package. Follow the directions closely and make sure only to use the specified amount of dirt to cover each type of seed.

  • Water Daily – Water your garden daily. Make sure the ground is soaked, but that water is not standing in puddles. Rake between the rows to keep the soil broken up and properly aerated. Once the seeds start to break through the soil, start to water beside the rows so you don't disturb the growing seedlings.

  • Pull Any Errant Weeds – As the rows begin to fill up with seedlings, you will begin to notice weeds growing between the rows. Make sure to pull the weeds that you see. If you don't, they will begin to rob nutrients that the seedlings will need to thrive. If the seedlings are deprived of sufficient nutrients, they will not grow properly and will eventually wither up and die.

Nothing makes a new house into more of a home than watching a garden grow. When you are ready to start looking for your forever home, contact us so we can get the process started.
