Getting ready to sell your home? Make sure you prep for the appraisal with these tips.

Having your home appraised can cause anxiety if you are worried about selling your home for a certain price. The key to receiving a good appraisal is knowing what you need to do to improve your home. Our real estate agents can help you look for things that will make your home look more inviting inside and have more curb appeal outside.

  • Give Your Home a Close Look – Before having an appraiser visit, it's important to give your home a good look. Look for anything that may be damaged or not looking its best. This can mean worn weatherstripping on your windows and doors or high-traffic areas in your carpet that may appear to be trampled down. Look for broken latches in cabinets and peeling wallpaper.

  • Deep Clean Everywhere – Cleaning never hurt anybody. A good deep cleaning throughout your home will make it look more spacious and inviting. Get rid of clutter and rearrange your furniture for better flow. Wash the windows and get into all of the hidden nooks and crannies.

  • Make Minor Repairs – In most cases, Bergen County homes for sale are well taken care of and don't require a lot in the way of repairs or upgrades. Making small repairs like fixing the weatherstripping or repairing leaking pipes are easy and will make your home more appealing. Most small repairs can be made quickly and easily with tools you have around the house.

  • Add Fresh Paint – If there is a room or two in your home where the kids may have gotten a little rambunctious, add a fresh coat of paint and clean up the trim a little. Sharp trim edges and new paint can give a room a whole new atmosphere.

  • Upgrade Your Safety Equipment – Upgrade your fire extinguishers and smoke alarms. Make sure you let the appraiser know that all of your safety and security features are fully charged and operational.

  • Install a Home Security System – Install a DIY home security system. It may not seem like much, but it is a simple way to keep your home secure. New home buyers will look for those features that take safety to the next level.

  • Spruce Up Your Lawn – When it comes to your lawn and landscaping, go above and beyond. This is your home's first impression, and curb appeal is everything. Mow and neatly trim your lawn. Clean out your landscaping beds and add a few fresh plants. Clear away any debris and grass clippings. Make sure toys, bikes, and other outside items are put away nicely.

When you're ready to sell your home and it's time to start the process, contact our office. We can help you figure out what you need to do first and if there are any ways you can improve your home before the appraiser pays you a visit. Simple repairs and thorough cleaning is the best way to improve your home's appeal and make it look its very best. Spend a few hours over a weekend and give your home a makeover. It will look much better and appraise at a higher value.
