For those of us who have a passion for gardening, we can't get outside early enough to start working in the soil. In our area, though, the weather may not always cooperate with our efforts. You can still start preparing for your garden months before you can actually work outside. You can find many of the things you will need right in your own home. If you are in the process of looking for a new home, our real estate agents can help you find the perfect place with just enough space for your garden transplants.
Start your seeds early inside – Use small containers (yogurt cups or biodegradable egg cartons are ideal) filled with potting soil and plant your seeds. Make sure to label each container so you know what is in each one. Seedlings can be hard to identify when they first start to sprout.
Use little greenhouses – You can also buy little greenhouse kits. This is probably the best option if you are planning on starting a lot of seeds. Starting multiple seedlings ensures you will have plenty to start your garden. If you have more than you need, give the rest away to friends and family.
Water as needed – Seedlings require a moist environment to germinate and thrive. Keeping the soil moist to the touch is important. Check the soil every day or so and water your seedlings as needed. Make sure you don't overwater your seedlings.
Prepare your garden plot early – While you have your seedlings started inside, you can begin to prepare your garden plot outside. Measure it out and plow the soil several times to break it up and add some air to the dirt. Rake it smooth each time.
Spread fertilizer and turn the soil once a week – Spread a little fertilizer and continue to turn the soil once a week. This will ensure that the fertilizer is worked deep into the soil long before you actually plant your seedlings. Turning the soil regularly will ensure that the soil is soft enough for the seedlings to take root and thrive.
Plan the layout of your garden – Many Rockland County homes for sale have plenty of room for a medium to large garden. Plan the layout of your garden and divide your plot accordingly. Put markers in place so you will be able to easily identify each area. You can adjust each area as needed when you get ready to plant your seedlings.
Transplant your seedlings – When the weather warms up, and the threat of freezing temperatures has passed, you can start to transplant your seedlings outside and into your garden plot. Once transplanted, you will need to keep a close eye on your seedlings to ensure they start to take root.
