You may be trying too hard and sabotaging your yard in the process. Here's how to avoid the most common landscaping mistakes.

Your lawn is one of the first things a new home buyer will notice. You can work hard to keep it looking great, but something is still not quite right. The fact is, you may be trying too hard and sabotaging your yard in the process. Doing too much or too little can harm your lawn even though you are doing your best to keep it looking green and full. Our real estate agents can provide you with a few tips to keep your lawn looking its best.

  • Fertilize in moderation – Fertilizing too much or too little can spell disaster for your lawn. Before you start adding fertilizer, have your soil tested to find out what type and how much is needed. You may not need as much as you think. Especially if you are using compost to boost your soil's pH.

  • Water appropriately – Make sure you know how much water your plants and lawn need to be healthy. Don't water too much or too little. This can be hard to measure. Work with a lawn care specialist to determine how often you need to water your lawn and for how long.

  • Use mulch properly – Mulch helps to conserve moisture and keep weeds from taking over. Too much in a small area may suffocate your plants making it more difficult for them to get the water and nutrients they need to thrive.

  • Plant the right type of flowers – Make sure you are planting the right types of flowers, grass, and shrubs for your area. Bergen County homes for sale are located in growing zones 6 and 7 when it comes to hardiness and climate. Talk to a landscaper to identify which plants will work best in your area.

  • Give your grass time to grow – Mowing your grass too soon in the spring or too often throughout the summer can stunt its growth and cause brown patches. Raise the deck on your mower so that you have a lush, thick lawn that's at least two inches tall.

  • Don't contaminate your compost – If you have your own compost bin, don't contaminate it with diseased plants or vegetable debris. Be mindful of what you add from your kitchen as well. Using your own compost to keep your soil healthy is beneficial, but only if you keep your compost bin full of biologically friendly waste.

  • Don't over-seed your lawn – Some homeowners think that a little extra grass seed will make all the difference. That may be true but it isn't always beneficial. Plant your grass seed according to the directions for a healthy, thick lawn.

  • Plant the right type of grass for your area – There are many types of grass seed that can be used throughout growing zones six and seven. Before you buy seed, take a closer look to determine if it's what you need for your area. If you still have questions or would like to use a mixture, contact your landscaper and see what blend he recommends.

  • Watch out for weeds and bugs – Weeds and insects can overtake your lawn in a few weeks' time. If you begin to notice areas that are starting to look discolored or like something is wrong with the grass, call your landscaper and an exterminator. Taking care of the problem before it gets out of control will make the job much easier.
