Ready to sell your home? Make sure these fixes and repairs are finished first.

Making the decision to sell your home is a big step. Many people don't realize how much work their home may need to ensure that it sells quickly and for a reasonable price. As soon as you begin to consider selling your home, take a good look around. Look for things that may detract from your home's potential. Even small things can cause a new home buyer to overlook your property. A few dollars here and there as well as a little time and effort will make your home more appealing. Talk to our real estate agents to learn more about sprucing up your home.

  • Clean up your kitchen cabinets – Clean up your kitchen cabinets inside and out. You can change the entire look of your kitchen by adding a coat of paint or simply changing the hardware. Your kitchen is often the hub of your home. Make sure it always looks its very best!

  • Upgrade your curb appeal – The outward appearance of your home will play a huge role in determining whether or not someone wants to take a look inside. Go over the outside of your home and other structures carefully. Clean them as best you can and make any minor repairs. Pick up any lawn debris you find and make sure the grass is well-trimmed. Take care of any landscaping as well.

  • Makeover your porch and front door – Welcome guests to your home with a freshly painted front door. Make your porch more inviting by adding a couple of chairs and a small table. Put down a Welcome mat and make sure all the lights work. It's the little touches that make a house a home.

  • Create a backyard oasis – Even if you don't have a deck or patio, you can still create a backyard oasis that is perfect for a little relaxation. A small fire pit or chiminea surrounded by a couple of lawn chairs is the ideal setting for having an adult beverage and laid-back conversation. If you are looking at Rockland County homes for sale, make sure to find one with a nice backyard. It won't take long for you to create your own private getaway!

  • Increase your storage areas – Storage is a valuable commodity that people can always use. Find furniture that has storage built-in. Use space organizers in closets so you will be able to fit as many items as possible without damaging them. If you have an open area in one corner of a room, add a bookshelf or cabinet that will add to your existing storage.

  • Brighten your basement – Basements are often dark and dreary but they don't have to be. Whether it's finished or not, clean it from top to bottom and add a few more lights. Brighten up areas where you can put a workbench or create a craft area. Set aside an area for extra storage. If your basement has been sealed to prevent moisture damage, you can lay carpeting and paint the walls. Choose to finish all or part of your basement and you can create additional living space that can boost the value of your home.

  • De-clutter and deep clean – Deep clean every area of your home and eliminate items you no longer need or use. Go through piles of clutter and make sure everything is put in its proper place. You don't realize how much space you can open up by going through items that you haven't used for a while. The same goes for your clothing, cookware, home décor, and cleaning supplies.

  • Perform a few quick fixes – Almost every home has something that needs to be fixed. You know it's broken, but keep putting off making the necessary repairs. A leaky faucet, a loose doorknob, or a burnt-out light bulb can be fixed within a few minutes and without spending a lot of money. Go through your home and inspect all of your major systems. Perform general maintenance to ensure everything is in good working order.

If you want the sale of your home to go smoothly, go over this checklist. A few minutes of your time will go a long way toward giving your home the facelift it deserves. Contact our office and we can help you find the things that most new home buyers will notice. It can make the process of selling your home go much faster.
