Visit These Historic Destinations Around Bergen County, NJ | Joyce Realty

As one of the four original counties in New Jersey, Bergen County has a rich history. You'll be able to visit a variety of historic sites in the county, ranging from a spring where Gen.   • Washington Spring - Van Saun County Park, 216 Forest Ave., Paramus, NJ 07652
    Located at the entrance of Van Saun County Park near Paramus homes for sale, Washington Spring has historical significance and is a beautiful spot where you can reflect and relax. The spring is where George Washington gave his horse water in 1780 after moving the Continental Army troops of about 14,000 soldiers into the area. Today, the site is a quiet oasis with beautiful, colorful landscaping, benches, and pathways where you can take a leisurely walk. The rest of the park is also worth a visit since it contains plenty of greenery, as well as Bergen County Zoological Park.

  • Garretson Forge & Farm - 4-02 River Road, Fair Lawn, NJ 07410
    One of the oldest Dutch stone houses in Bergen County, Garretson Forge & Farm can be found near Fair Lawn homes for sale. The house was built around 1720 and has been enlarged and renovated through the years. You'll also find other historic buildings on the property, including an early 19th-century carriage house, a large barn, and an outbuilding built around 1800. And make sure to see the gardens located on the farm, many of which have historical tie-ins of their own. 

  • Gethsemane Cemetery - Summit Place and Liberty Streets, Little Ferry, NJ 07643
    Gethsemane Cemetery was founded in 1860 as a one-acre site that served as a burial grounds for African-Americans. Located close to Little Ferry homes for sale, the cemetery has graves through the early 1900s. Around 50 stone markers and 27 inscribed headstones are visible, but records indicate about 500 people were buried there over the years. Unfortunately, many remain unidentified below the surface, and some headstones have been lost.

  • Women's Federation Monument - 1 Alpine Approach Road, Alpine, NJ 07620
    The Women's Federation Monument is a castle-shaped reminder of the successful efforts of the Englewood Women's Clubs and the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs to preserve the Palisades. It's located in Palisades Interstate Park near Alpine homes for sale. In the 1890s, several companies began blasting the Palisades Cliffs to get broken stone to use for railroad beds and concrete. Despite efforts to stop the work, the blasting continued. Finally, in 1900, the women's clubs convinced Gov. Foster Voorhees of New Jersey and Gov. Theodore Roosevelt of New York to pass legislation for an Interstate Commission to buy and protect the quarries.

  • The Hermitage Museum - 335 N. Franklin Turnpike, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ 07423
    The Hermitage Museum
    , located near Ho-Ho-Kus homes for sale,  is a 14-room Gothic Revival house built around 1760 and renovated in 1847. It's now a National Historic Landmark, and in addition to its interesting architecture, the house is known for hosting influential people, including Gen. George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Aaron Burr. Guided tours are available on Saturdays and Sundays, and the grounds are open daily.
