6 Rail Trails to Bike on Around the Hudson Valley | Joyce Realty

There's nothing like taking a bike ride along an abandoned railroad. Rail trails are great places to see an interesting and diverse landscape while immersing yourself in nature and getting some exercise. And there are plenty of great rail trails in the area that are perfect for biking. Here are six that you'll love.

  1. William R. Steinhaus Dutchess Rail Trail - Martin Road & NY 82, Hopewell Junction, NY 12533
Running from Hopewell Junction to Poughkeepsie, the William R. Steinhaus Dutchess Rail Trail is 13 miles through natural and man-made beauty. With a paved road and a dirt path available, there are trailheads in several places along the way, including the Hopewell Depot Museum, Wappinger, East Fishkill, and LaGrange, all of which include parking lots. On the trail, you'll find bridges, tunnels, wooded areas, old train cars, and a breathtaking view of the Hudson River. Take a look at these Dutchess County homes for sale before your ride.

  2. Lehigh and Hudson Rail Trail - 14 Kennedy Road, Green Township, NJ 07821
If you prefer a shorter route, Lehigh and Hudson Rail Trail is a 2.3-mile gravel path from Airport Road on the north end to Kennedy Road near these Sussex County homes for sale. The entire trail is lined with trees for shade, and it runs through fields, both under and over bridges, and along some of the most picturesque landscapes in the area. It also runs through EverGreen Park, which has picnic tables, a playground, soccer and baseball fields, and other amenities for a weekend outing.

  3. O&W Rail Trail - 487 Washington Ave., Kingston, NY 12401
Running through Kingston near these Ulster County homes for sale, along the now-defunct O&W Railroad, the O&W Rail Trail is perfect if you're looking for an off-the-beaten-path excursion. A great place for natural beauty, the rugged trail provides views of deer and other local wildlife, plus rolling hills, historic houses, and the Hudson River. Running 27 miles, it includes three separate areas, Northern, Central, and Southern, with parking at each, so you can choose the length of your trip.

  4. Heritage Trail - Ryerson Road, New Hampton, NY 10958
Built on the former Erie Railroad, Heritage Trail passes through a wildlife sanctuary, making it a great place to see birds and other local animals. This broad, asphalt trail is open to both regular bikes and e-bikes, as well as skaters and pedestrians. Running nearly 20 miles close to these Orange County homes for sale, it has seven different access points and plenty of parking. It's open throughout the year, from sunrise to sunset, and provides gorgeous views of trees and luscious greenery.

  5. Harlem Valley Rail Trail - Orphan Farm Road, Copake, NY 12517
Parts of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail are currently under construction for resurfacing, but there's still plenty to enjoy along the route. It currently stretches 26 miles, from Wassaic to Copake, but it's continually being expanded, with plans for the trail to reach 46 miles. It passes through several wild areas where you can see woods, ponds, ducks, beavers, foxes, and other wildlife. However, the route also features several historical relics, such as old train stations. Whatever you're looking to see, the Harlem Valley Rail Trail is a great place for a long bike ride.

  6. Ashokan Rail Trail - West Hurley, NY 12491
The Ashokan Reservoir is a beautiful area with views of water, woods, fields, and more. And one of the best ways to see it is along the Ashokan Rail Trail. The 11.5-mile trail is surfaced with fine, crushed stone and provides plenty of space for walking, biking, and even skiing in winter. Open sunrise to sunset throughout the year, the trail has multiple trailheads between West Hurley and Boiceville and is fully wheelchair-accessible.

The Hudson Valley is a great place to live, with all sorts of things to see and do. Contact us if you're ready to make this area your new home. Our real estate agents will help you find a house that meets your needs in a neighborhood you'll love.
