Professional movers provide relief from much of the stress of moving. But there are some items you cannot or should not entrust to them. To help you prepare for an assisted move, Our real estate agents want to point out some items that will fall to you.
- Documents and Personal Papers
Property deeds, birth certificates, shot records, insurance policies, and any other important papers should be filed in a temporary file box and accompany you on your journey. Replacing them is time-consuming, and you may discover that you need some of them long before you unpack. Expanding file boxes are available wherever office supplies are sold.
- Medications
Daily prescriptions should be easily accessible so no one misses a critical dose. However, over-the-counter medications should also be conveniently packed. Is there anything worse than suffering from a pounding headache while you search through boxes for a simple relief med? Consider packing the first aid kit in the same place for quick access to band-aids.
- Jewelry and Small Valuables
Some items simply cannot be replaced, even when insured. Jewelry, heirlooms, and precious memories should be protected from loss or damage. When you looked at Bergen County homes for sale and Rockland County homes for sale, you probably imagined some of your memorabilia on display there. Make sure those images become reality by keeping those items with you.
- Living Things and Perishables
As cherished members of the family, your pets belong with you. Make sure they are safely kept in appropriate pet carriers. You may be tempted to let them roam freely in your vehicle, but it is generally unsafe. Houseplants can, for the most part, be transported across state lines but may be subject to inspections. Exotic plants and invasive species will be restricted, and you may need to leave them behind. Carefully pack them in cardboard boxes with wadded newspaper in between containers to help prevent any damage from falling over. If your move is for a short distance only, you can certainly move refrigerator and freezer items yourself. However, perishable foodstuffs other than travel snacks should be left behind for a long-distance move.
- Hazardous or Flammable Items
Most people know about the need to drain gasoline from lawnmowers before transporting them, but other items may not be as readily identified. Nail polish remover, pesticides, propane tanks, and many other corrosive or dangerous materials are also restricted. Your moving company will likely provide you with a list of what they will not transport. However, consider this list for your own vehicle as well. They are restricted for safety reasons, and what is unsafe for movers is unsafe for you as well!
