Top Spots for Family-Friendly Learning in the Hudson Valley | Joyce Realty

It's a lot easier to learn when you're having fun! If you're a parent, then surely you've found this to be true for your kids. The good news is that the Hudson Valley is home to a wide variety of museums, nature centers, and other destinations where the whole family can enjoy learning in a fun, interactive environment. Here are a few top spots our real estate agents recommend.

  • Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum - 75 N. Water St., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601
The Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum has a wide variety of exhibits tailored toward kids. There are interactive games related to both history and science. One example is the Science Revealed station, where kids can engage in hands-on activities to learn about magnetism, motion, and forces.

The Mid-Hudson Museum is open Tuesday-Sunday, and tickets are $14.50 for adults and children. The third Sunday of every month is Family Free Night, and all ages can enjoy free admission from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. This would be a fun way to spend an evening after looking at Dutchess County homes for sale!

  • Motorcyclepedia Museum - 250 Lake St., Newburgh, NY 12550
Who doesn't love motorcycles? At the Motorcyclepedia Museum, kids and adults of all ages can learn about motorcycles throughout history. The museum houses the collection of Gerald and Ted Doering, which they compiled over an 80-year period.

Admission to the Motorcyclepedia Museum is $15 for adults and free for kids. On Thursdays, admission is only $8! Don't forget to look at some Orange County homes for sale while you're in the area.

  • FASNY Museum of Firefighting - 117 Harry Howard Ave., Hudson, NY 12534
Firefighters have saved countless lives, and you can learn all about them at the FASNY Museum of Firefighting. As the world's largest firefighting museum, this destination houses horse-drawn fire carts from the 1800s, early diesel fire trucks, and more. Hands-on exhibits even show kids how early fire solutions, such as bucket brigades, worked.

This museum is open Wednesday-Sunday. Admission is $12 for adults and $8 for kids. If you're in the area to look at Columbia County homes for sale, make sure you stop by for an hour or two.

  • Hudson River Maritime Museum - 50 Rondout Landing, Kingston, NY 12401
Learn about the history of sailing and boating in the region at the Hudson River Maritime Museum. You can take a guided museum tour, listen to stories about sailing, or even enjoy a woodworking craft. The model boat carving classes are especially popular!

Exhibits at the Hudson River Maritime Museum include historic boats and ancient oars. Adults may also find the digital collections of old maritime photos fascinating. You won't be far from some incredible Ulster County homes for sale, either.

  • Hudson Highlands Nature Center - 120 Muser Drive, Cornwall, NY 12518
The Hudson Highlands Nature Center is a great place to spend some time outdoors, learning about the plants and animals that call the Hudson Valley home. The hiking trails are always open from dusk to dawn, and there are so many nature programs to choose from, including Maple Sugar Tours and Young Naturalist classes.

If you visit the center for a hike, be aware that dogs are not allowed on the property. Trail maps are available on the center's website, and there are plenty of options for shorter, kid-friendly hikes of 1 mile or less.

We hope you and your kids enjoy your time at these educational venues. If you're still looking for area homes for sale, don't hesitate to contact us. We're happy to guide you through the home-buying process.
